Upstate NY snow season could start this weekend with some slush and flurries

Syracuse, N.Y. — That four-letter word you either love or hate has crept into Upstate New York forecasts.
Snow, at least a little slushy snow at higher elevations, is possible Sunday and Monday nights.
“There is potential for ice pellet showers mixed in with range and chances for snow, mainly above 2,000 feet,“ in the North Country, the National Weather Service said. ”Can`t rule out some low accumulations above 2,500 feet amounting to slightly more than 1 inch.“
OK, so you won’t need to shovel or even brush your windows. But this is how it starts every fall: A little wet snow in October, and before you know it the real snow season is kicking into gear.
In Central New York, we can expect rain Sunday, but temperatures won’t fall low enough for snow to form.
In other parts of Upstate, there’s also a chance for some snow at higher elevations early next week. The higher terrain of the Tug Hill plateau, the upper peaks of the Catskills and the tallest hills along the Southern Tier are the most likely spots for some wet flakes.
Meteorologists aren’t completely sold on the snow idea, but it’s their job to point out the possibilities.
“Temperatures may become marginal for some wet snow flakes over the higher terrain of the Tug Hill and Western Catskills, late Sunday night, but confidence is pretty low,” said the weather service office in Binghamton.
After that brief chilly interlude Sunday into Monday evening, the chances of even light snow fade as a high pressure system brings sunshine and warmer temperatures into late next week.
The long-term forecast calls for another warm, wet winter with a little more snow than last year but still well below normal.
